I'm riveting the sheer clamp and understand that up forward, you rivet through the lower sheer plank screw holes, frame and sheer clamp and then rivet the upper screw holes to just the frame.
What about the lower screw holes in the sheer plank aft of the deckframes where the sheer clamp is attached through the upper holes? Are these riveted or are the screws left in?
And if you leave the screws in there, why not up forward?

Hi Tom: After one has completed various steps in the construction of the Haven and depending on your age; its amazing how much you forget. I had to go back and review my work and now a lot of it is covered up so then I have to think; what a job. Just kidding. Anyway as you stated you rivet thru the lower holes since that is where the clamp is and then in the upper holes I just screwed the sheerstrake to the frame rather than riveting; less chance of splitting frame and the rivet is already doing the majority of the holding. Then aft of deckframes I left the screws in the lower holes; rivets above, and I think as you have everthing sitting there in front of you; you'll probably know what would be best. As an added element in my Haven I didn't want to see those ugly rivets and roves sitting out in the open of the cockpit. So I added a covering board over the clamp; I used a forstener bit to drill out partial holes for the rivets to sit in and then glued the boards to the clamp. Not only does this hide the rivets but it also gives you a litle larger covering board (1/2" maybe). More room for cleats, flange eyes, etc. Also I ran my coaming board all the way to the bottom of clamps. I think this is better because it also provides more surface for the coaming to fasten to. When I got to that point I steamed the mahogany coaming, srewed and glued (5200) and clamped it in place. If you look carefully at my site pictures I think you can see what I am talking about. I Hope this helps if you have further questions let me know. Best, JACKnext newest topic | next oldest topic
