Posts: 65 IP: Logged Posts: 495 I drilled most of the keel holes through the floors on a drill press before mounting them on the boat. After mounting the wood keel, I drilled UP through the holes in the floors. After turning the boat right side up I covered the top of the keel with Sikaflex, carefully aligned the boat, and drilled down through the keel from inside the boat. I didn't put any finish on the lead keel, though I probably should have. Managed to get the keel poured a few weeks ago. I'll post some pictures and my procedure later. Getting ready to mount it now and have a few questions.
1. What did people do to finish and prepare the lead. I'm thinking I may epoxy coat it then primer and paint.
2. The how to book says to bed with white lead paste and Irish felt. Since these are not readily available I'm thinking 3m 5200. I know its hard to remove later but I'm thinking that's a good thing for a keel.
3.When drilling for the keel bolts we start from the inside of the boat. Did anyone get all the holes started from the inside then slide the keel out from under the boat to finish them? Or did most drill all the way through the lead while it was still under the boat?
Any other helpful tips would be appreciated. Once this is on it should be all down hill. Looking forward to a summer launch.

Congratulations Brent! I'm looking forward to posting the photos. I would recommend against 5200 for this purpose. You can't predict what circumstances might occur in the future requiring removal of the keel. The bolts are more than adequate to keep the keel on. I used Sikaflex.

Did you countersink for the bolt heads on the bottom of the keel?
I can get sikaflex so I guess I'll go with that too.
One more thing. Did you use 1/2" bolts in place of the 7/16"?

Yes, I did countersink for bolt heads on the bottom of the keel. I did it the hard way (lying on the ground with the boat in a sling) See:
