Finishing up with planking soon and am thinking about caulking. Did anyone use different seam compound below the waterline and above the waterline. Also, for some reason, no one actually says what they used. They'll say something like, just use your favorite (insert generic chemical name)compound. Well I don't have a favorite compound because I've never used one. Can someone say they used Sitkaflex XXXX or Lifecaulk, etc. We all love saying what kind of wood we use on every part of the boat but no one will say what specific glue, epoxy, seam compound, caulk, paint, etc you used.

Good point. I used Sikaflex 291 LOT (Long open time) to caulk my planks. It worked well; not a drop of water when I launched her! I also used 3M5200 on each plank at the stem and transom only, thinking it might be needed to hold the planks in place and keep them from springing out. This was probably a mistake and I don't recommend it. I don't think it's necessary, and it will make the job of removing a plank more difficult, should the need ever occur (hopefully not in my lifetime!)

I used Sikaflex 291 as well. After experimenting with a few instruments to finish the seam I found the best result with a wet finger and latex glove. Take the time to mask each seam. It will pay off when clean up comes.

I too used Sikaflex; seems to be great so far. Definetly mask off prior to applying; you'll save a bunch of time and effort. I did have a problem when i apllied my first coat of paint as it didn't want to dry over the seams. Since I was using Kirbys paint I talked to them regarding this and they had no immmediate answer. I tried various things (different paints, primers, drying times) and nothing seemed to work until finally after about 7-8 days from sanding the Sikaflex the paint finally dried. So maybe one needs to wait till the Sicaflex is completely cured. Jack
