Hello Guys,

I've read scattered previous forum posts on this and some people say to bed the garboard at the faying surface with the bedlogs and others say not to. I've seen posts where some people also bed the planks at the stem and transom. I thought I'd start a specific post to get people's ideas in one area. It would be good to hear from people who have recently planked their boats.

Any takers?

I elected to use no bedding at all. Personally don't see the benefit of glueing the plank to the bedlogs. My pessimistic attitude says I want to make it easier to remove the plank or the centerboard trunk if the need should arise (hopefully many years down the road)

I used Sikaflex. Whatever you do, don't use 5200!

I thought in the book they bed with 5200. I think they also bed (I forget with what) in the Wooden Boat 7-part restoration article last year. I bedded with 5200 knowing full well the consequences of it. But any of the articles I've read and I think Roger has had this problem also, is that the boats have leaked at the garboard/keel seem. Bedding is what people have used to prevent this. Bedding with 5200 makes repairs a lot harder if you're trying to take apart the pieces you've put together with it but if you use 5200, you may not need to repair those joints because of its use.

Tom

A cursory look through the "How To...." book didn't turn up any reference to using 5200 on the garboard. Could you site the page for me? Countless entries on the WB Forum warn agains using 5200 on anything that might have to be taken apart someday. Who know, damage to the garboard is certainly possible from any number of causes, and rot happens!

Thanks

I thought I saw them bedding the garboard in but I am mistaken. I know previously in this forum there is talk of bedding the garboard to the bedlogs. They do use 5200 to bed the keel to the bedlogs, stem and transom. The garboard to bedlog area is a lot of surface not to have some kind of bedding compound between it.

I've been doing a bit of reading on this subject. An article in WoodenBoat uses 3M5200 as a bedding compound. I also emailed Rolf, who built a Haven a few years ago, and he used Interlux 214 Boatyard Bedding Compound on his boat. He also said that Greg Rössel uses the same stuff on his garboards.

I'm almost ready to hang my garboards and am going to use the Interlux bedding compound.

John,
Is that a bedding compound similar to 5200 or more like Dolphinite. I know in an old WB article on red lead, Bray talks about how he paints all faying surfaces in red lead and uses Dolphinite to bed all the hardware. It's from the early 80s, have to pull it out again.

Let us know how things work out with the Interlux.

From what I've read on the WB Forum Dophinite and the Interlux bedding compound are similar. Forumites have their own preferences, of course
