Steven Dr. Andree has submitted many new photos. He writes: "Greetings-

This will be my first communication with you so I thought an introduction would be appropriate. My name is Steven Andree, I am a physician, and I began my Haven 12 1/2 about one year ago. I am truly an amateur and have never undertaken such an "ambitious" project ever before. Needless to say it's been quite an experience.

My two biggest dilemmas are the following:

1. Plank on Frame construction may not stand up to trailering/storage in the San Diego climate where I live.
I'm considering strip planking with 1/2" red or alaskan cedar ("bead and cove"). Unfortunately there's not much information on this process...if there was only a "How to" book using this method. The info on the website is helpful but limited for a beginner.
I would likely not to cover it with fiberglass because of the extra weight.

2. For my keel I can't find any White Oak out here that's not kiln dried.. The main source for boat lumber on the West Coast is Edensaw in Port Townsend and they didn't have any recommendations (Flounder Bay Lumber shut down). Subsequently I called Eric Dow. He is cold molding his Havens and is laminating the Keel with three layers of mayogany. I may have to do this."

Hello Steve,
This is Steve. Welcome. I strip planked my hull. I used square edged strips. The cove and bead is not necessary and takes extra time to mill.
The strips will twist and take the shape quite nicely.

I am perparing to deck the boat now. Feel free to contact me.

Welcome Steven - from one amateur to another. Hope you find the forum as helpful as I have. One other great resource if you haven't already found it is the woodenboat forum, sponsored by Wooden boat magazine. They can probably answer both of your questions best. Probably give you options for your keel material as well- what to use and where to get it. Best of luck.
