Its time again to start thinking about posting our year-end progress reports. If you email me a photo or two, I'll ADD THEM to your post. (info@havenbuilders.com). If you have completed your Haven, how about a little write-up on your experiences with your Haven this year, along with some photos? Many have made great progress this year; others more modest progress, but let's hear from all!

Its fun to get nostalgic and look at prior years reports:

No more windshield scraping this winter. The garage, comandeered four years ago for havenbuilding, has finally been repatriated to its rightful vehicles. My Haven has been stored properly elsewhere. Close enough so that I can "go to check on her" once in a while. I miss the daily time I spent working on her and long for next spring when I can launch her once again. I didn't get nearly enough sailing in after her Labor Day launch. Here is my favorite picture of her:

.

and if you haven't already seen it, here is a link to a home movie of her launch (thank you Google):

I look forward to reading updates from all of you. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

It was a good year for progress on the Jenny Lynn. (I noticed a lot of boats named for their wives- suppose its thanks for putting up with us while we obsess over our build)
Anyway heres my summary. Finished planking through the winter months thanks to a mild winter. Through spring I was able to fair, prime and paint the hull then flip her over in time for the summer months. Continued to make good progress for my standards - sheer clamps, deck and floor beams, paint, bulkheads, decks and deck coverings. Recently I have enjoyed applying some Mahogany trim and even the odd piece of bronze. Gives me hope I may actually finish.
I still hope to get the coamings done before the new year.My regrets were : Cracking the sheer plank. Against most peoples advice I used it anyway but don't have any regrets. It has been stable ever since the repair even after driving a copper rivet through it. The other thing I had hoped to do this summer was get my keel poured. Now it will have to be next spring which will surely hold me up.
I just sent off a bunch of pictures that maybe could get added to this message.
Best wishes to everyone this Holiday Season.

Hello All,

I haven’t posted in awhile but I’m still around, just very busy.

I finally finished setup, after 2 tries, and starting framing. Hoping to start planking this Spring but we’ll see. I am beginning to realize that persistence is the most important tool when boat building.

Bill.

P.S. I have a load of pictures but haven’t put together the report yet, should be done in the new year.

Almost done with my planking. Got down to the shutter and shearstrake and had to stop and search for the mahogany. While that was happening, I started to fair the hull. This is when I realized how sloppy I planed the planks. Granted I was guessing how much the hollowing out would take but some planks were quite thicker and required a lot of muscle with the jackplane. THis also caused a problem with bungs and screws. Because some planks are a bit too thick, when drilling pilot holes the depth was set incorrectly. If I was setting it for a half inch plank but it actually is 5/8 or more the screw will be set too high and when it came time to fair, some screws where being hit and had to reset to the final countersink depth. A lot of unnecessary work.
Other then that, the hull is looking quite nice and am now cutting out the sheearstrakes and tackling the 'swell'. I think I'm about a month or 6 weeks behind my initial schedule, but I have been missing some nights because of work travel. Hoping I can make a Sep or Oct launching.

"Well yet another sailing season is in the books- I made the annual voyage this year to the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior....
I always enjoy the Year End Reports and ask other member to tell us a little about your own sailing with the Haven. I already look forward to next years trip."

"I did start my Haven last October. It took me quite a while to make my mind about what type of hull construction to do. I' m planing to sail in different area (on trailer most of the time) so this is why I did choose the cedar strip planking technic (composite) with biaxial fiberglass cloth 16 oz."

This year involved making the deck pieces inside the compartments, interior painting, chainplates and deck framing. I have devised a rub rail and installed it. The foredeck framing has been covered with okume in preparation for a laid deck. It feels good to finally be working on parts that will be seen.

A few pictures to show what I,ve done through these cold months.

Around New Years was able to get the coamings on. I steamed them, and bent them right on the boat. Definitely a two or three person job. As with most of the boat it wasn’t a perfect job. Despite putting the copper nails into the edges they still cracked a bit. The nails kept it from spitting completely though. A bit of trimming from here and lots of varnish and I’ll be happy. I feel like its all down hill from here. Also got the bow cleat on (ebay buy) - thanks to my wifes long arms. I wasn’t able to reach to get the nuts on myself due to filling in too much of the bulkhead. Now I’m free to finish the bulkhead. Guess I’ll put the Dynel to it once the weather warms. Not having it done hold up a lot of other things – mast step, floor support, bench support, pads for cleats. Etc. etc.

Here are the blanks for the spars. All made from Douglas Fir. Two years ago I bought three hundred 2x12’s out of a demolition site. Used most as floor joists in my house but had some left over. Boom and mast are two pieces laminated together , the others are solid. I may epoxy coat them before varnish or I may just varnish. When clamping up the mast I had it supported at either end with horses and didn’t realize it was sagging in the middle. Now I have a permanent bend in the mast. I hope it will come out when tensioning the stays. Interesting to see the difference in dimensions of the spars on the H 12 ½ plans. I have elected to go with the ugly mast cone sold by JM Reineck. Slowly collecting lots of blocks and other bronze stuff on ebay.

Bench support made of plywood and oak rather than the steam bent piece.

"That was a special year for me; starting this project last october and now the mold almost set up, I can easily imagine the final result while thinking now about how I'm going to build the woodkeel ... What a feeling building a boat ! I did spend so far close to 300 hrs in 4 months (evening and week-end). This site help me quite a lot to be more confident on how to manage the technical issues. Great job !"

Pierre
