I am ready to start caulking. I have 8 strand caulking cotton and about 3 strands look ok for the seams , which are mostly fairly tight inboard and bevels about 1/16 min to a few at 3/32 on the outside. Some daylight shows here and there. Q? Just how hard do I whack this stuff into the seam. I have a roller and some oo irons.

Let me say first that you will quickly get a feel for how hard to push in the caulking. You certainly don't want to be driving the cotton through the seams. But you want to leave room for compound to go over top of the cotton. I would guess my cotton was close to half way into the seam, give or take a 32nd depending on my bevel. I intentionally put more cotton into the garboard plank seam and used a hammer and stiff paint scraper to pound it in. Try a seam with a consistent caulking bevel first to get the hang of it. Good luck and have fun.

Thank You Brent,
Went down to the shed and put in the broadstrake seam with 3 strands. You were right on the money . by the time I reached the end of that seam ,I knew how much it needed.next newest topic | next oldest topic
