MTRA WORKBEE IN LUZERNE The Michigan Trail Riders Association is a well-organized group of individuals that accomplished what appeared to me to be an impossible feat. The first weekend in May, my friend Marcia and I joined a workbee to build a new bridge over Big Creek near Luzerne. We pulled into the Luzerne Trail Camp on Saturday morning. This was the first time I had ever participated in an activity with the MTRA. Bob Broegman, trail boss, gave us a ride to the work site. When I saw a pile of eight 42-foot-long by 1 ½ foot-diameter logs at the top of a cliff and realized that they needed to be carried down a steep cliff to the river at the bottom, I thought it was an impossible task. Apparently, the U.S. Forestry Service didn't want any big machinery used to accomplish this task. Marcia and I just stood at the top of the cliff and declared that it was impossible and could not be done. We watched the first volunteers, as the first log to be carried down the cliff was prepared. A lead rope was wrapped around the log with a person on each side holding an end of the lead rope. Other people joined in with their lead ropes wrapped around the log. There were approximately 36 people ready to carry the first log down the cliff. Together they began calling out the rhythm, "Lift," take a few steps, "Down." "Lift," take a few steps, "Down." The log slowly went down the cliff and over to the river where the bridge was to be built. I began to realize what it was like to be a slave building the pyramids in Egypt. All the people working together, using all of their muscles and their might to accomplish an impossible task. The first log was placed over the river successfully, and the people hurried back up the cliff to carry the second log down. This time Marcia and I jumped in to help. When all eight of the logs had been placed over the river, according to the engineer's plans, everyone admired their wonderful accomplishment. They also gave each other advice about treating their tired-aching backs and muscles. The new bridge was completed by the end of the weekend. My first experience with the Michigan Trail Riders Association made me realize that this group of people, a combination of individuals each with their own experience and expertise, was the most organized group of volunteers that I had ever been a part of.

To: webmaster@mtra.org Subject: August Newsletter: Thank You! Date: Sun, 08 Aug 1999 13:46:40 +0100 Hello ro all @ MTRA Many thanks for my newsletter; even though it looks like I'll not be able to get over this year, I welcome being kept in touch. I think that the idea of a book is excellent - we need to preserve the history of the organisation and the anecdotal material that it is strength. I came to MTRA after working on the Thumb for three months in 1988 teaching English riding. I am a professional performer and a friend took me to a public access TV station in Detroit to see how things are done over there. We saw an MTRA newsletter on the noticeboard and, being totally ignorant of what was involved (!) thought that we'd give it a try. By the time I came over the next year to ride the Fall Shore to Shore I had precisely two hours of Western riding under my belt, not enough money, very little food and two willing but rather undisciplined hired horses. My friend persuaded her father to loan his trusty pick up, and thanks to the generosity of the Bob & Cathy Diroff we managed to haul all of our feed. We did make it to Lake Michigan more or less in one piece but we couldn't have done it without the support of Ilma & Richard Flannery and Bob Broegman and the kind wishes of many trail riders. Over the years, I have greatly valued Ilma's friendship and looked forward to our correspondence; she is sorely missed. A memorable incident amongst many of that first trail ride was in meeting up with Pam Wingfield whom most of you know as "English Pam". We discovered that we had lived a few doors away from each other in England and she did in fact go to school and socialise with some of my brothers and sisters. Although she had emigrtaed before I had a chance to know her, her father used to give me candy on the way home from school - and we meet for the first time in the middle of the forest in Michigan! I look forward to coming over again to ride and in the meantime send my good wishes to all in MTRA. Regards Charlotte Kasner MTRA 1929

I've had a couple of people tell me how well organized you were and that you made what seemed to be a "mission impossible" a POSSIBILITY. I also have a wonderful double registered sabino mare (TWHBEA & SSHA)for sale. She is excellent on the trail, pickets, crosses water, side passes, backs and is always SMOOTH. Thanks for the great site. Is there a way for the Board Members who know of certain problems on specific trails to post updates on this site? We have not been able to attend organized rides but are members and ride the trails aroung Grayling. We went up this June after three years away and made some big goofs by following our trail maps. Wish we could look up specific facts on specific trails here on this site. Also, indidvidual members could post comments about their experiences and suggestions regarding problems encountered and solved. Anxious to get the new set of trail maps which will hopefully indicate all the changes since the last pubplished set. Hope many more trailriders will join and contribute to the message board.

I have a correction to my earlier post about the first June ride. I just talked to the trail boss, and he said there were 30 riders who finished going shore to shore out of about 45 starters. Apparently the heat didn't affect the outcome of the ride because that's about a normal percentage of those who complete a 10 day shore to shore ride. The next June ride has 125 riders who are planning to go the whole distance. There'll probably be a larger percentage of them finishing than the first ride because they'll have 4 layover days to rest themselves and their horses.

I took my 4 year old gelding on the first June ride for 3 days, and he did fairly well for his first solo camping trip. After doing a couple of caprioles on the picket line and talking to EVERY horse in camp, he settled down so the camp could get some sleep. The next a.m. we did a camp to camp ride. It was horribly hot for most of the ride and I was told that only 19 out of 40 riders who signed up to ride all the way across were able to complete the ride. I had great fun, though. I saw a lot of the people I hadn't seen since last year, and I wish I didn't have to go home. I missed the awards night because my gelding decided to jump into the front area of my stock trailer that morning, and he got his back end stuck behind the chest bar. He did get himself out of it with only minor cuts & scrapes, but I decided to take him home and let him relax in his own pasture after that fiasco. Next year he should be ready to do a longer ride. He just needs to learn to keep those front feet on the ground! ;-) See you all in September with my 20 year old well seasoned horse!

Wondering if there are some folks near the Saginaw area who would like to go on shorter rides, to get this one in the groove. Also, would like tips on what a horse needs to be prepared to do on the longer rides. Such as pointers on tying, etc. Anyone inereseted on going on shorter rides with a green one? In recent years you have had rides starting late May into June then another later in June which is ok but I was wondering this year it is June 4-13 then 19-July 3. Why is there never one late in June 19- the 3rd then the next one starting July 9-23 or something like this for those families that have school most of the year except for July and August months and there is nothing offered for us. Is there a reason for this? I have been a member from 1985 and have not been on a ride since 91 for many reason but one reason is the time factor used in June being the only time offered for the summer. There was a ride one August what happen to that one, not enough riders? Please let me know what I can do or you can do for me on this . thank you Denise Hansen

For those of you who couldn't make it to the MTRA work bee, here is what we did on the Luzerne bridge-building project. The main structure of the bridge outside of the Luzerne camp was cracked and unsafe. It was heavily damaged by severe storms that toppled huge trees onto it; so MTRA set out to rebuild it on the weekend of May 1st and 2nd. A crew assembled the 44'-long bridge on top of a hill near the river on Friday, April 30th before the majority of us got to the site on Saturday. Then the bridge was disassembled and taken down the BIG hill and through the swamp by a lot of MTRA manpower (and womanpower)! We hand carried 8 - 2000 lb. utility poles, the shorter poles for the cribbing (foundation), and a whole bunch of 3" x 8" x 8' planks down to the river; and got the bridge pretty much built in one day. Meanwhile, there were workers on the other side of the bridge who were repairing the railings on the boardwalks. Fortunately, the long boardwalks only suffered minor damage from the fallen trees, and I believe the railings were the only part that needed repairs. A smaller crew then went in on Sunday to do the finishing work on the bridge, while some of us stayed back at camp and nursed our aching bodies! :-) It looks like the trails around the bridge are cleared now, so we should be able to get through that area for the rides this year. Yee Haw! Happy trails to all of you.
